Bio

Tracy Nugent concentrates his practice in the areas of business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, securities laws related to private placements, intellectual property licensing, secured financing and commercial real estate.

Tracy works closely with companies and entrepreneurs, and has helped guide many clients through the process of establishing a new business, raising capital, securing intellectual property rights, structuring agreements among an entity’s owners and with its employees, negotiating agreements with customers and vendors, technology licensing and the acquisition and sale of businesses through asset and equity transactions.

Tracy has assisted many entrepreneurs negotiating licenses to commercialize technology developed at the University of Illinois. He has also handled many transactions involving the acquisition and sale of jet aircraft. Tracy works with clients locally, as well as clients having regional, national and international business interests, and has represented clients in transactions with Fortune 100 companies.

Tracy is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and is past chairperson of the ISBA Business and Securities Law Section Council. Tracy has been a member of that Section Council since 2006, and has been a contributor to the Section Council newsletter that is subscribed to by business lawyers throughout Illinois. In 2014 Tracy became a member of the Institute for Illinois Business Law, a group of attorneys that review and recommend changes to business laws in Illinois, and has participated in review of and revisions to the Illinois Limited Liability Company Act. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and its section of Science and Technology, and a member of the Champaign County Bar Association. Tracy has been recognized by his peers as a leading lawyer in downstate Illinois.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Business Administration at the University of Illinois Tracy worked in the transportation industry in Chicago for a year, then returned to the U of I to earn both his law degree and MBA degree in 1984. Tracy joined the law firm of Meyer Capel in 1984 and became a shareholder in 1989.

Community and Civic Engagement

Tracy has served as a commissioner of the Housing Authority of Champaign County and has also worked with, and volunteered his time to assist, many local charitable organizations.

Personal Interests

Tracy’s wife, Claudia, is a local gastroenterologist. They have two children, and enjoy sports, music and travel.
