Litigation Paralegal

Meyer Capel Law Firm is looking for a skilled litigation paralegal to assist during all phases of the litigation process. Duties will include legal research, discovery document review, investigation, service of process, drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, other legal memoranda, and jury instructions. This position will also assist with discovery and formulation of arguments and assist at hearings and trials. Requirements include proven working experience as a litigation paralegal, strong written and communication skills along with attention to detail. Organization and the ability to handle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment is a must. A paralegal associates degree or other relevant certification is required. ABOUT THE ROLE

Meyer Capel, a dynamic Midwest law firm, is in search of a high-capacity, tech-savvy and reliable individual to supplement its estate planning and estate settlement team. The right candidate will help the Firm’s estate attorneys stay on the cutting-edge of providing legal and advisory services to its diverse client base by supporting a fast-paced, thriving transactional estate planning practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As Estate and Trust Support you will work closely with Meyer Capel’s Estate Planning Group and will report directly to one or more of the firm’s estate planning attorneys. You will be an integral element in a robust planning practice and experience multiple opportunities to develop your skillset and work with increasing independence.

We expect you to excel at several of the following areas and have competencies or a passion to learn the others:

  1. Provide concierge-level customer service to our clientele and collaborators;
  2. Be the welcome first point of contact to new clients and a trusted point of contact for clients thereafter;
  3. Coordinate client intake, screen for conflicts, manage attorney calendars;
  4. Prepare and handle outgoing correspondence and address incoming correspondence;
  5. Gather and digitize financial, legal and other documents; input, collect, compile, organize and analyze confidential information;
  6. Serve as witness to estate planning signing ceremonies;
  7. Prepare various estate-related documents at the direction and supervision of an attorney;
  8. Collaborate with other colleagues in a professional service environment.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must satisfy the following mandatory minimum qualifications:

  1. Have excellent command of the Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat;
  2. Be extremely well organized with a high attention to detail and a command of grammar;
  3. Be friendly and personable, able to client-face warmly and easily;
  4. Demonstrate terrific proofreading skills as well as written and oral communication skills;
  5. Be a solutions-oriented teammate and display a can-do attitude;
  6. Strive for efficiency without sacrificing quality;
  7. Displays a high-level of autonomy and is a self-starter who follows through on commitments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred (but not mandatory) qualifications include:

  1. Two or more years of work experience in estate and trust support as a legal assistant, in wealth management or estate settlement or at a financial institution or trust company;
  2. Bachelor’s degree ore equivalent.

Seasonal Associates

Summer 2022 Seasonal Associate (Part-Time)

Meyer Capel, one of the most diversified firms in Champaign and downstate Illinois, is seeking 1L (Class of 2024), and/or 2L (Class of 2023) summer associates for employment at its Champaign office (306 W. Church St., Champaign, IL 61820) during summer 2022.

Seasonal associates assist the firm's attorneys in handling research projects, drafting pleadings, contracts, and various other documents. Seasonal associates are exposed to a wide range of practice areas (e.g., litigation, transactional, estate/trust, etc.). As time permits, seasonal associates are also encouraged to sit in on client meetings, depositions, court hearings, real estate closings, estate plan signings, etc., to gain experience related to the practice of law and the business of private legal practice. This position is a terrific opportunity for students interested in private practice at a mid-sized firm that values its clients, staff, and culture.

Compensation: $14.00 - $15.00 per hour ($14 p/hr for 1L; $15 p/hr for 2L)

Responsibilities

As COO you will work closely with the Firm's President and will report directly to the Firm's Board of Directors. You will be an integral member of the Firm's executive leadership team and will have direct reports in multiple functional areas of the Firm.

We expect you to excel at several of the following areas and have competencies or a passion to learn the others:

  1. Developing, prioritizing and overseeing teams to implement strategic initiatives within the Firm.
  2. Analyzing and improving operational functions of the firm and fostering an environment where others are encouraged to do the same.
  3. Developing, tracking and improving key performance indicators (KPIs) for the Firm.
  4. Overseeing key financial functions of the Firm, including budgeting, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and tax reporting.

Skills & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 7+ years of managing a team of 10 or more staff
  • Law firm or other professional service management experience
  • Experience implementing processes at scale
  • High emotional intelligence
  • Proven ability to develop and manage high-performing teams
  • Strong leadership, organizational and communication skills
  • Prior HR experience (recruiting, benefits and/or compliance)
